Description

An English description of the definition (what distinguishes this sense of the term?).

The Land Use Pattern provides the necessary concepts to describe a particular classification(s) applied to some area of land. It introduces the generic concept of a LandUseClassification which may be extended to capture specific classification systems as required. It can be extended with classifications from Land-Based Classification Standards (LBCS), Canada Land Use Monitoring Plan (CLUMP), and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). A goal of future work will be to define the classifications in greater detail such that any relationships between classifications in different systems can be inferred. The Land Use Pattern imports the Spatial Location Pattern (defined in ISO/IEC 5087-1); in particular, Land Areas have some location (a Feature) which may be described as a geometry, they may also be related to other Land Areas (or arbitrary spatial Features) by the spatial relations such as containment, contact, overlaps, and so on.

Key Concepts and Classes

A Land Area is a way of defining some area in an urban system. • A Land Area has a Location at a given point in time • A Land Area may be classified as having some Land Use Classification. • There may be other types (subclasses) of Land Area, defined in more precise or different ways, such as a Zone. • A Land Area may have some Area. This is currently a variant property and we have yet to determine whether this is equivalent to the area of the Geometry of the Land Area location (e.g. there may be various values with different accuracy from different sources). • A Land Area may have some population that is subject to change over time. • A Land Area may have a number of employed residents that is subject to change over time. Land Use Classifications provide a means of describing the land cover/use in a standard way. Various classification systems are used to identify types of land use. See Annex C for examples of how the pattern may be extended with specific classification systems.
